Theology/Religious Studies

One-to-one lessons with Jenny have rapidly brought my biblical Greek reading skills to another level. Jenny has also shared her knowledge of textual criticism, discourse analysis, and John’s Gospel, all of which has been helpful for my studies.

Ancient History and Civilisation

My postgraduate studies and professional research are topics of the ancient world.

From Dr Jenny: "Building on my work on ancient manuscripts, I have developed programmes of language learning that aim to simplify the grammar and adapt it to the student's needs."

Ancient Greek and Latin

Building on my work on ancient manuscripts, I have developed programmes of language learning that aim to simplify the grammar and adapt it to the student’s needs.

Religious studies

My teaching and research expertise is in Christianity and Judaism, but I also teach other religions at secondary level, and I oversee the writing of essays and research projects in other areas. I have a particular interest in the Jewish world of the 1st century.

meet dr jenny

Throughout my professional teaching career, I have worked in education at all levels in the UK and abroad in such countries as Switzerland, Ivory Coast, Russia and Hong Kong.

Until 2022, I was a university lecturer in Ancient Greek and Religious Studies with extensive experience supporting students at undergraduate and post-graduate levels; I have supervised 30+ PhD theses in these subjects.

In addition, I am an experienced secondary school teacher of languages and Religious Studies, and have been an examiner with several boards.

I teach extensively as a private tutor at secondary and tertiary level, leading consistently to improved grades and exam success. Some of this teaching is with groups of adults who want to explore a subject out of curiosity and for enjoyment, without aiming for qualifications.

Alongside my teaching of languages and humanities, I am engaged in research on ancient manuscripts; I have a PhD and a post-doctoral diploma in linguistics and textual criticism, and have published widely. I am often invited to teach abroad and to speak at international conferences. I enjoy spending time in musical activities (piano playing, singing), gardening and hill-walking. I am a lively, physically fit and highly organised person, with excellent communication skills, and I always bring creativity and a sense of humour to whatever I do. I instinctively seek to communicate my positive and optimistic outlook to the students I teach. A native English speaker with near-native fluency in French, I also have a knowledge of Catalan, Spanish, Italian, Welsh and German.

I have a DBS certificate which is kept up to date.

As English is not my first language, I felt truly supported and understood throughout the process. Dr Jenny is highly experienced and knowledgeable, and I really enjoyed our sessions, which helped me improve my writing and develop my ideas with confidence. I felt encouraged to take ownership of my work and express my own thoughts clearly… thanks to this collaboration, I was able to achieve a distinction. I feel very lucky to have had such supportive and inspiring guidance on this journey.

My publications

Latest release: L’Évangile de Jean selon le Codex de Bèze: Texte grec, traduction et notes

This volume aims to present a translation into contemporary French of the Gospel of John based on a single Greek manuscript, the Codex Bezae (D 05). This manuscript is a copy (dating from around 400 CE) of a text closely related to the earliest Latin, Syriac and Coptic versions, and which is cited by the early Church Fathers.

Its Greek text is presented here alongside the text usually used for exegesis and modern translations, namely that of Nestle–Aland 28, in order to facilitate comparison. All the variants between the two forms of the text are systematically indicated, using a visual system that is easy to follow.

Accompanied by explanatory notes, this French translation — published here for the first time — highlights the distinctive features of the Codex Bezae. By emphasising the antiquity of the text and the Jewish perspective it reflects, these features raise the question of its dating in relation to the standard text, that of the current Greek edition, Nestle–Aland 28.
